Recently after a short evening sermon I invited a young lady who has just returned from overseas trip to step forward and give witness to what Jesus has done in her life. Since she has not often stood before the congregation she was afraid and was feeling little bit uncomfortable. She started by saying , as you may have been able to observe my life has totally changed around. I am not bothered by anything any more. I have peace and joy in my heart. I asked her what had happened? She said, pastor, do you remember calling me continuously for over a year? Many times I did not answer your phone calls even if I had listened to your several messages in which you encouraged me to come to church for prayer and to listen to the word of God. Many times you left messages such as; “Jesus loves you.”, “ Come as you are.” “We love you too.”, “ Is there anything you want me to help you with?” She was sobbing when she was speaking these words. One day I listened to your invitation and promised to come to church. I did. But with great fear. I always thought I have messed up too much in my life. Several people around here know me. They will laugh at me. They will make fun of me. Moreover, I am not beautiful. Who likes to see me? She cries. I stood up and said your okay. You are among those who love you and respect you for what you are. Do not be too hard on yourself. She continued, and said I have this persisting fear that my seven year old son will die. I thank God he is well. I traveled safely picked him up and returned safely. Lord Jesus has done so many things for me. I was able to sell my house at a time when people have difficulties selling theirs. People’s comments and attitudes do not bother me any longer. I love Jesus, because he saved me from extremely bad life and forgave all my sins. My joy is simply from knowing I am a forgiven sinner. I do not have much knowledge in the Bible. I want to learn more. A poll recently conducted in America asked what is the # 1 thing that the youth wanted out of life, “and believe it or not the most common reply was, to be loved.” Like this young lady several people think They have messed too much “sinned a lot” and God will not love them. However, the fact is that Jesus came to the world to seek those who are lost in their sins. And that is precisely why Jesus was sent by God. Jesus’ invitation is appropriate to remember here, “Come to me all whose work is hard, whose load is heavy; and I will give you relief. Bend your necks to my yoke, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble-hearted; and your souls will find relief. For my yoke is good to bear, my load is light.” (Matt.11:28-30)
Today I invite you all to come to Jesus just as you are. You do not have to first be righteous, clean or sinless. Just come as you are and confess your sins to Him who has paid the price of sins to set you free. May God bless you richly. Yours in Christ, Pastor Francis Stephanos. |
